“They were not, with few exceptions, readers — never had been; that they had always occupied themselves with music, TV, and videos; they had difficulty slowing down enough to concentrate on prose of any density.”
Literary critic Sven Birkerts tells a story about his experience teaching an undergraduate course on short stories in 1994.
He tried to solicit opinions on the story he’d selected, but came up short. “My students could barely muster the energy for a thumbs-up or -down,” he writes. “It was as though some pneumatic pump had sucked out the last dregs of their spirits.”
That was 1994. Imagine 2020.
“For in fact, our entire collective subjective history — the soul of our societal body, is encoded in print. Is encoded, and has for countless generations been passed along by way of the word, mainly through books.”

Why don’t we reanalyze all the street names, instead of picking on Hubbard alone, and see what needs to go or replaced because it was named after a racist, segregationist, misogynist, tax evader, islamophobe, xenophobe, torture supporter, occupation supporter, war crime supporter, anti labor rights, anti credit unions, and the rest of the list of unacceptable traits, because perhaps we won’t find a name that doesn’t need to be replaced?!
This is not change. It is shallow cosmetics.
The name Detroit in itself is given by French colonialists who eventually massacred native Indians. Maybe it should go too?!
The pictures on currency, all the works of art in museums …
We are seeking life on a different planet with no history.
We changed names in Arab countries every time there was a coupe. Nothing changed.
The French Revolution went through “déchristianisation” of France, desecrating and modifying all works of art, sculptures, and architecture … a disaster in Art history.
I am not fond of shallow changes.

White supremacy or racism are types of ignorance and therefore they are a by product of the weakness of the education system in America.
American schools continue to be segregated because of their geographical boundaries based on segregated cities. Curriculums continue to cater to the satisfaction of the “stake holders” which is a betrayal to education. Teachers are chosen to fit the “environment” of the students or the “school culture” which decreases their diversity. Topics deemed “controversial” are avoided in classroom. Teachers opinion limits free speech in classroom most of the time because of intolerance to intellectual opposition.
There are rarely any diverse schools in America, and there are rarely a true implementation of the curriculum.
Finally, the curriculum, although not bad, needs work and updating to serve the needs of the time.

“الله يهديك” هو دعاء قبيح لانه يكتنف على شيء من الفوقية الاخلاقية.
“May God guide you” is an ugly prayer because it assumes most of the time a moral superiority.
“Moral superiority is the belief or attitude that one’s position and actions are justified by having higher moral values than others. It can refer to: Morality, when two systems of morality are compared. Self-righteousness, when proclamations of moral superiority become a negative personal trait.”

While we should always mobilize to fight against racism, police brutality, and fascism, we also need to mobilize against apartheid, occupation, dictatorships around the world, suppression of freedom of expression, blasphemy laws, oppression against women and minorities, drug use and trade, religious persecution, unjust wars, corruption, and abusive oligarchies and monarchies.
During the 8 minutes George Floyd was detained and murdered, there was 1 one woman rapped in America, and 4 women rapped in the world, 12 committed suicide, 10 women domestically abused, 14 children reported abused, 2 elderly are victimized by a violent crime, 13 persons assaulted, 100 homes robbed, a yemeni child under the age of five died due to Saudi-American siege, 194 children are in Israeli prisons, 3 women admitted to ER for overdose and 1 person died, over a million Muslim Chinese are in concentration camps, and about 4000 migrant child are in US custody.
And guess what, many people don’t care or know or do anything about it, and they don’t even take a minute to vote in the elections.
Anarchy and chaos and mob mentality belong to prehistory.
Business are owned by families and mother and fathers and daughters and sons who have put their sweet and blood in building.
Big corporations are mostly publicly owned and they contain the retirement plans of teachers and fire fighters and nurses.
We are not in feudal society anymore.
Malcom X never advocated looting or crime or destruction of property. He only advocated self defense.
We need to step back and examine our reactions to all abuses in the world, and our killing silence to most of them.

If you are going to count “spiritual needs” as essential, then open up museums and theaters for me.
But I don’t mind them closed in support of our governor’s safety measures.
