Election of Activist Wissam Sharafeddine as the First Arab American to Join the Central Committee of the Green Party in the United States: An Opportunity to Create Change

Dearborn – Sada Al-Watan

The U.S. Green Party, which has members across America, witnessed a historic moment during the 2024 elections with the election of Arab American activist Wissam Sharafeddine as a member of the party’s Central Committee. The Green Party, one of the main political parties in the United States, was founded in 1984.

Sharafeddine, who resides in Dearborn, Michigan, is known for his political and social activism, his involvement in numerous local and national campaigns, and his strong advocacy for political reform and a fairer political system in the country.

The election process took place via an online vote in which members of the U.S. Green Party participated, with Sharafeddine winning a seat on the Central Committee for a term ending in 2025. This makes him the first Arab American to serve in this position.

In an interview with Sada Al-Watan, Sharafeddine said that this victory is a new opportunity to expand alliances with international movements and to focus on building a popular base that aims to achieve political and social change.

He stressed that his role in the Central Committee will focus on developing the party’s political discourse to address the needs of diverse communities, increasing political participation, and ensuring representation for all societal groups, including marginalized and underrepresented voices.

He added that one of his main priorities will be to enhance grassroots organizing, connect local communities with the party’s initiatives, and focus on political education that does not remain confined to theory but is tied to practical activism.

Sharafeddine explained that his vision includes broadening political awareness among Arab and immigrant communities, encouraging them to run for office, and contributing to building political power that reflects their needs and aspirations.

He pointed out that the Green Party’s platform is based on core values such as social justice, environmental sustainability, and nonviolence, in addition to supporting policies that ensure a better future for coming generations.

Sharafeddine also highlighted the importance of empowering young people to participate in political life, saying: “We want to prepare the next generation to take leadership roles and bring about the change we all seek.”

He noted that the Central Committee’s meetings are open to all party members and that he plans to actively participate in its various committees and projects to implement the party’s goals nationwide.

Article 2: Equality

Community Spotlight: Article 2 – The Principle of Equality
From the Universal Declaration of Human Values by Wissam Charafeddine

Throughout history, humanity’s understanding of equality has been shaped by both struggle and revelation. While ancient societies often accepted hierarchy as natural, the idea that all human beings are equal began to take root during the Axial Age, around 800–200 BCE, when spiritual and philosophical traditions in Greece, India, China, and the Middle East began advocating for universal moral values. It later gained momentum during the Enlightenment, when thinkers like Rousseau, Locke, and Kant championed natural rights. These ideals blossomed in documents such as the American Declaration of Independence (1776), the French Declaration of the Rights of Man (1789), and ultimately the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), each building on the growing belief that no person is born superior to another.

As Langston Hughes once wrote:
“O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.”

In our diverse Livonia community and beyond, the principle of equality remains a cornerstone of justice and human dignity. Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Values reminds us that all individuals deserve equal treatment, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, social status, religious belief, or family background. This isn’t just a moral idea—it’s a call to action to create a society where opportunity, protection, and respect are shared by all.

This principle is deeply rooted in historical struggles and global progress—from the civil rights and feminist movements to modern LGBTQ+ advocacy. Legal protections like anti-discrimination laws and international human rights declarations were hard-won through generations of effort, and they continue to shape our communities today. Livonia thrives when we uphold these values—fostering inclusion, fairness, and mutual respect in our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

By embracing equality as a guiding principle, we honor the legacy of those who fought for justice and build a stronger, more compassionate future for all. Article 2 is more than policy—it’s a reflection of who we are and the kind of community we aspire to be.

Thanks to all the friends who helped introduce me to sociologists who spoke Arabic. Within 24 hours, I got to know more than 20 Arabic-speaking sociologists. And if this indicates anything, it indicates the power of social media and its usefulness for those who use it in order to advance the world for the better.

كانت ثورة سلمية ضد الفساد حتى لا ندمر البلد

و لكن الفساد لم يكن سلمياً و دمّر البلد على كل حال

It was a peaceful revolution against corruption so Lebanon is not destroyed

But corruption wasn’t peaceful and it destroyed the country anyway.

اول مرة ينفجر الفساد ليحطم زجاج الفاسدين مع زجاج الشعب ويودع اطفالهم المستشفيات مع اطفال الشعب.

الفساد لا بد ان يقتل صاحبه يوماً ما.

For the first time, corruption explodes in Lebanon and shatters the windows of the corrupt along with the windows of the people, and injures the children of the corrupt along the children of the people.

Corruption must one day kill its doer.
