Election of Activist Wissam Sharafeddine as the First Arab American to Join the Central Committee of the Green Party in the United States: An Opportunity to Create Change

The U.S. Green Party, which has members across America, witnessed a historic moment during the 2024 elections with the election of Arab American activist Wissam Sharafeddine as a member of the party’s Central Committee. The Green Party, one of the main political parties in the United States, was founded in 1984.
Sharafeddine, who resides in Dearborn, Michigan, is known for his political and social activism, his involvement in numerous local and national campaigns, and his strong advocacy for political reform and a fairer political system in the country.
The election process took place via an online vote in which members of the U.S. Green Party participated, with Sharafeddine winning a seat on the Central Committee for a term ending in 2025. This makes him the first Arab American to serve in this position.
In an interview with Sada Al-Watan, Sharafeddine said that this victory is a new opportunity to expand alliances with international movements and to focus on building a popular base that aims to achieve political and social change.
He stressed that his role in the Central Committee will focus on developing the party’s political discourse to address the needs of diverse communities, increasing political participation, and ensuring representation for all societal groups, including marginalized and underrepresented voices.
He added that one of his main priorities will be to enhance grassroots organizing, connect local communities with the party’s initiatives, and focus on political education that does not remain confined to theory but is tied to practical activism.
Sharafeddine explained that his vision includes broadening political awareness among Arab and immigrant communities, encouraging them to run for office, and contributing to building political power that reflects their needs and aspirations.
He pointed out that the Green Party’s platform is based on core values such as social justice, environmental sustainability, and nonviolence, in addition to supporting policies that ensure a better future for coming generations.
Sharafeddine also highlighted the importance of empowering young people to participate in political life, saying: “We want to prepare the next generation to take leadership roles and bring about the change we all seek.”
He noted that the Central Committee’s meetings are open to all party members and that he plans to actively participate in its various committees and projects to implement the party’s goals nationwide.
